River Hospital’s Polar Bear Dip celebrates its 36th year!

River Hospital is excited to announce the 36th annual Polar Bear Dip, taking place Saturday, February 28, 2026 at 1 pm at the Bonnie Castle Resort and Marina in Alexandria Bay, New York.

The long-standing winter tradition invites community members to brave the icy waters of the St Lawrence River in support of local healthcare. Participants may pre-register in advance and begin fundraising online. Same day registration will be available from 10 am to 12 pm, with the official dip beginning at 1 pm. All registered dippers will receive their dipper number on February 28 at the Bonnie Castle. The minimum donation to participate is $100 and all dippers must be at least 18 years of age.

Over the past 36 years, the Polar Bear Dip has raised more than $1.2 million to support critical capital equipment upgrades at River Hospital. Past funding has helped modernize mammography services, echocardiography equipment, and cardiac monitoring technology. This year, all funds raised will support the purchase of upgraded vital sign monitors for River Hospital’s Emergency Department and Ambulatory Surgery Unit.

These monitors are a core component of patient safety. They provide continuous real time tracking of heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and other critical indicators, allowing clinical teams to detect subtle changes earlier and respond more quickly when seconds matter. For patients and families, this technology means safer procedures, faster intervention, and greater peace of mind during some of life’s most vulnerable moments.

“The Polar Bear Dip is a powerful example of what a small community can accomplish together,” said Stephanie Weiss, Executive Director of Development at River Hospital. “Every plunge represents neighbors showing up for one another. Because of this event, our clinicians have access to the tools they need to monitor patients closely, intervene sooner, and deliver the highest level of care close to home.”

The success of the Polar Bear Dip is made possible through the dedication of the River community, including volunteer dippers, event sponsors, local fire departments, dive teams, and countless supporters who contribute year after year. Their collective effort ensures that River Hospital can continue investing in modern equipment that directly benefits patients across the region.

“In a rural community, having the right equipment matters,” said Stephanie Weiss, Executive Director of Development. “Because of the Polar Bear Dip and the generosity behind it, River Hospital can invest in advanced monitoring technology that helps ensure patients receive timely, high-quality care close to home.”

River Hospital invites individuals, teams, families, and spectators to join in this year’s celebration of tradition, generosity, and community spirit. Whether taking the plunge or cheering from shore, every participant plays a role in strengthening local healthcare.
